The Heritage Of Polish Rock
During Soviet occupation, after Second World War, Polish rock music became the weapon of resistance. The state struggled to control the outbreak of freedom of expression by controlling the media, labels and venues. Under the scrutiny of MO, SB and KGB the rock movement was being censored by altering the band's names and texts of the songs.
Thanks to the perseverance of those who refused to put down their weapons (guitars, drums, keyboards etc.), we can enjoy the culture created during that era. The main players include first and foremost Perfect, then TSA, Dzem, Budka Suflera, Lombard, Republika. Late eighties presented wave of "alternative" (Lech Janerka, Rezerwat, TLove, FNS, Kobranocka) and punk (TZN Xenna, Dezerter, Kryzys, Tilt).
Alongside the resistance movement, polish rock brought us the understanding of the ideology and symbols associated with rock, good and bad. Nonconformist hairdos, clothes, and behavior, often frown upon, became known and tolerated, even mainstream. Scary symbols and provocative lyrics paved the road to the freedom of expression that extended to other areas of life.
In winter 2004 St. Basil School became a house for Saturday Guitar School. Attending students learn to play guitar, by repeating tedious exercises, learning chords and scales. Once comfortable with the guitar, they have the opportunity to form a band. There are currently two rock bands playing variety of covers. Keeping with their heritage, band's repertoire includes: Chcemy byc soba, Ale w kolo jest wesolo, Wokol sami lunatycy, 51.
Our bands have performed on numerous venues, and are currently looking for singers. Once suitable candidates are found, Saturday Guitar School will release CDs containing music they play.
